Why I chose to specialize in an upper cervical (neck) chiropractic technique

Do you want the biggest value for your money and time? I do. This is why I chose to specialize in the upper cervical spine. When I was in chiropractic school, I learned many forms of chiropractic. I learned how to adjust the whole spine and to adjust the extremities like hands and feet even. There are a lot of great chiropractors out there that do full-spine adjustments. But, I chose to specialize in only the upper cervical (upper neck) area using a chiropractic technique called NUCCA. This stands for National Upper Cervical Chiropractic Association (See http://www.nucca.org/). I only work on the top vertebra of the neck, called the atlas or C1 vertebra. I make a precise, gentle correction to C1 and use that as a lever to do a more global adjustment, affecting the whole body. Why would I choose to “limit” myself to only 1 bone of the spine, you might ask? The answer is below, in the details.

The atlas bone is so named because it holds the world on its shoulders. Atlas was the Greek mythological titan that received the punishment of holding the world on his shoulders. Our “world” is our head, which is a 10-12 pound bowling ball, while the atlas bone itself is only 2 ounces! This bone is tasked with providing us as much as half of the rotation of our head and also is connected to many muscles and ligaments in an area called the suboccipital triangle. The brain is especially interested in what is happening to this part of the spine and there are many neurological reflexes that connect this area to our balance centers and our vision and hearing. The nerve receptors that are located in this area are very densely populated. There are more receptors in this area that in any other area of the spine (242 mechanoreceptors/sq. inch)!

Well, so what? This is important because I am trying to explain why I am specializing in the upper cervical spine. Our brain needs to keep the communication lines open between itself and the rest of the body. Also, the vertebral artery passes right through the atlas area as well. Any misalignment in that area can hamper the proper flow of nerve flow and blood to the brainstem and cerebellum. The brainstem is like the grand central station for our cranial nerves and controls all of our life-supporting mechanisms like breathing, heart rate, heart rhythm, digestion, etc. etc. Having a misaligned atlas can affect these functions. A quick example for this is a study that was done on upper cervical misalignments and blood pressure: NUCCA Blood Pressure study .

Who might have this type of misalignment? The answer is most everyone to one extent or another. Any type of accident or injury can throw the alignment of this bone off. It can even happen, and commonly does, when we are born. Birth can be a sprain in the neck! We can easily check a baby to see if they fall under this category or not. If not, then most kids will get misaligned when they start to bump around trying to walk or playing on the playground or falling off the trampoline. Most patients have their problems associated with a spill or fall or hit the head. Sometimes, the patient had the accident 20-30 years before and is now starting to see the effects of the misalignment.

When a patient comes to my office, I perform an exam and take precise films of the head and neck area to get a 3-dimensional view. Then I analyze them to see exactly how the atlas is misaligned. From this, I can derive a customized angle for each patient so that I can bring the spine back into a line. This is done gently, without pushing or cracking or snapping. Patients cannot barely feel it, but they notice the difference immediately, if not soon thereafter. We take 2 films after the adjustment to ensure that we have reduced or normalized the alignment. As patients hold this correction, they improve.

What can this help with? Below is a list of things that have been known to respond well to upper cervical adjustments: arthritis, asthma, ADD/ADHD, back pain, bed wetting, abnormal childhood development, chronic infections, constipation, depression, seizures, ear infections, fibromyalgia, hay fever, headaches, herniated disc, high blood pressure, indigestion, knee pain, low back pain, migraines, muscle spasms, sciatica, scoliosis, TMJ problems, whiplash, etc. etc. This list is not exhaustive.

Here is a very recent testimonial of one of my patients who came in with trigeminal neuralgia (intense nerve pain in the face): “My initial contact of your office was totally by accident….I have been troubled by intense pain in my right jaw caused by trigeminal neuralgia. I tried acupuncture without success. I even tried a pain management physician who prescribed two very strong narcotic drugs which also did not help. The pain continued without relief; being almost to the point where I would scream. I was desperate! We met with Dr. Hartman Andersen who mentioned one of his colleagues [Dr. Stockwell] was successful in treating trigeminal neuralgia….After the 1st two treatments [with Dr. Andersen], my pain was greatly reduced. I continue to visit Dr. Andersen for treatments that continue to put my life back in control. Other treatments for trigeminal neuralgia would have cost much more and would have required me to travel great distances for a procedure that would not guarantee a success rate of greater than 50%. I am thrilled that I do not have to take narcotic drugs to help the pain; much less turn me into a zombie. I would recommend Dr. Andersen to everyone who has the need to overcome pain, and improve their quality of life. The NUCCA method of treatment is a new protocol for me, but it works!” F. Weigel

So again, I ask the question, do you want the biggest bang for your buck? Come see me in my clinic in St. George, Utah. I am working in Dr. Jack Stockwell’s St. George, Utah practice full time. 3-week group detox details

More details about the 3-week detox:
An effective detoxification program results in feeling much more energetic, the disappearance of many minor aches and pains, a decrease in the level of major physical discomforts, and most importantly, a change toward a better and more positive mood.

The program involves a diet that has low allergy-producing foods and a nutritional shake (Clearvite-SF from Apex Energetics) that is to be taken on a specific schedule (see below). Be prepared for each day of the Clearvite-SF® program by planning your meals ahead so that you have the foods beforehand and you are rummaging about the kitchen trying to scrounge up food. Remember: “Organic is best.” We will be ordering the Clearvite Shake by February 20th so everyone has it ready to go on March 1st. Ordering info to follow soon. The shake is going to be $110 per person, which will last for the 3 week program.

Foods to eat (not an exhaustive list, but almost):

• Drink plenty of fresh water (8-10 glasses), herbal teas, fruit juices (use sparingly, with no sugar added), vegetable juices
• Grain foods made from rice (brown and white (brown is better)), millet, quinoa, buckwheat, or tapioca
• Fresh vegetables (twice as many vegetables as fruits), Fresh fruits
• Lentils, Beans (navy, white, red kidney, etc.), peas (fresh, split, snap)
• Mainly deep sea fish (not shellfish), and moderate amounts of chicken, turkey, and lamb (organic is best)
• Use mainly olive oil, flaxseed oil in moderation, and grapeseed oil and coconut oil.

Foods to avoid:

• Any food that you are allergic to
• Dairy (milk, cheeses, yogurt, butter), eggs, margarine, & shortening
• Foods prepared with Gluten-containing cereals like wheat, oats (unless labeled gluten-free), rye, barley, those ingredients normally found in breads, pasta, etc.
• Corn.
• Alcohol, Caffeine (coffee, black tea, sodas)
• Soy or products made from soy, such as soymilk or tofu
• Peanuts or peanut butter
• Beef, pork, cold cuts, bacon, hotdogs, canned meat, sausage, shellfish, meat substitutes made from soy

Program:
Days 1-4 = Preparation Phase 1: One serving of Clearvite Daily, before breakfast. Eat any and all of the foods on the approved foods list above. Stay away from the foods to avoid.

Days 5-7 = Preparation Phase 2: Two servings of Clearvite daily, one before breakfast and one before dinner. Eat all of the foods on the approved list and stay away from the foods to avoid.

Days 8-14 = Detoxification Phase: Three servings of Clearvite daily, each before the breakfast, lunch and dinner meals. Eat everything as before but eliminate all animal products (no fish, no chicken, no lamb, no turkey). Add additional rice protein powder to the shakes so that blood sugar will be supported during this phase, since no meats will be eaten at this time.

Days 15-18 = Completion Phase 1: Two servings of Clearvite daily, one before breakfast and one before dinner. Eat all  of the approved foods, including animal proteins. Avoid unapproved foods.

Days 19-21 = Completion Phase 2: One serving of Clearvite daily, just before breakfast. Same food instructions as completion phase 1.

After the 3 week program, you will want to slowly reintroduce the avoided foods back into the diet one at a time so that you can see what foods might give you an bad reaction. These foods might be the culprit for why you have certain symptoms. Gluten is one of the possible allergenic foods that can cause many problems in people. More details on how to reintroduce the foods back into the diet to come......

Additional recipes for meals soon to come.....

A discussion about your program should occur with your family members and spouse so they can be supportive during the program. Do the program with your spouse if he/she will agree. This will make things easier. Many times spouses and family members will unconsciously try to sabotage family members during the program and it helps to be prepared to discuss the issue if it arises. It is not uncommon to have an adverse reaction while in the program (nausea, gastrointestinal irritation, skin outbreaks, anxiety, etc.) for a brief period. If this occurs it may be due to too much of the detox support shake product. At this time, you can decrease the amount of clearvite if needed.  Please know that having a reaction like this is telling you that your body is toxic. It is a good thing that this is happening and the adverse reaction will not last for very long. However, most people will never encounter adverse reactions.

That should do it for now. Let me know if you have any questions. You can also go to http://www.clearvite.info/index.htm for more details.

How can you detoxify your body in a healthy manner, while losing weight?

Hi friends and family,

Get ready to do a family and friends group detox, starting March 1st, 2011.

My wife and I recently finished a three week detoxifying cleanse and want to share the goodness with our loved ones. The primary purpose was to help the body rid itself of toxins that build up and tend to overload our body, especially the liver. The nice side effect is that we both lost weight. Some people do these types of cleanses just to lose weight, but I wanted more of a clean slate for my liver. My mind has never been more clear and my body has never felt better. Aches and pains that were ailing me for years started to leave. My wife lost weight that beforehand was untouchable by her many attempts at diet and exercise.

The basic premise for detoxifying is to reduce/reverse the effects of the unhealthy, toxin-laden environment that we are immersed in.  Toxins have multiplied since the Industrial Age and have not  decreased. The increased toxicity that surrounds us can overload our functional capacity for disposing of the toxins on our own. If our liver is overloaded, we can tend to store the toxins in places like our fat instead of eliminating them. If we didn't have so many sources of toxins all around us and in us, we wouldn't need to do a detox. Increased toxicity comes from poor diets (processed food, nutrient-depleted soil, artificial additives), prescription drugs and things like tobacco and alcohol, air and water pollution, and bad digestion/absorption in our gut caused by food sensitivities. Reducing toxins will help prevent chronic inflammation and diseases. I am not saying this is a cure for things like cancer or anything so bold. But, if the body is given the building blocks, it will do its job of keeping itself healthy.

So I am inviting friends and family to start another cleanse with us starting March 1st, 2011. The cleanse will last 3 weeks, or 21 days. There is a simple diet (see below) that we will follow and there is a supplemental shake that we will take on a specific schedule that provides liver-detoxifying herbs, vitamins and minerals, and extra protein.  The shake can be used as a meal replacement, but it is mostly used as a meal supplement. The shake is called Clearvite from Apex Energetics (http://www.clearvite.info/index.htm). It is normally $120+ shipping per person for a three week supply (two cans) and I can get them for around $110. We will provide helpful tips and lessons learned when we did our first detox in January. Stay tuned for that.

The diet is mainly an anti-inflammatory, health-promoting diet that eliminates the types of foods that give most people problems, thus giving the body a chance to rid itself of toxins and lose weight. It consists mainly of fruits and vegetables, healthy protein (fish and chicken), healthy oils (olive oil, flaxseed, and grapeseed oil) and rice and legumes (beans and lentils).

The diet eliminates foods that can potentially cause allergies. This is why the diet does NOT allow gluten-containing grains (no wheat, oats, rye, barley), corn, dairy, eggs, soy, peanuts, or shellfish. Once the cleanse is complete, you can reintroduce these types of food back in to the diet slowly so that you can see how they affect your body.

I will provide more details about the diet and will also provide recipes and other things on the blog so you don't have to search far for what to make for your meals.

Join us if you want to detoxify and lose some weight. I think it will be fun to do it as a group so we can all support each other in the process and share ideas and recipes.

In the beginning...

Hello to the Cyberworld,
My wife finally convinced me to take the plunge into the cyberocean. So here it goes...the time has come.

A little about me:
I am in my first year of chiropractic college at Life Chiropractic College West in Hayward, CA and am anticipating a long and fulfilling professional career. Because I'm starting chiropractic school about 10 years later than most, I have to make up a bit for some lost time. I am married and have 4 children! Yeah, I know, it doesn't sound like the ideal situation, right? It actually is working out quite nicely. It's not as if the last 10 years were a waste of time, because I learned valuable lessons in the software sales world. My family enjoys where we live in NorCal too. In some cases, it can be advantageous to enter graduate school a little later on, at least it was for me.

This blog will be used to post some of my key learnings and ideas from school and from other books and studies as well, mostly on the topics of health and wellness.

I also want to offer products that readers can buy that will help for quality of life and well-being. I will offer certain supplements and products that have helped me and my family and/or have been backed by some really good research. Maybe I'll be able to do this at discounted rates. Watch for products to be added shortly....

Cheers,
Hartman
